Historically Georgia was situated at the border of Great Empires — its territories were always desired for the Great Asian Empires, for Arabs and Tamerlan, for Mongols and Ottoman Empire, from the I century AD up to XVIII century. In spite of great number of invasions Georgia succeeded to preserve its unity. In centuries David Agmashenebeli (David the Builder 1089-1125) — the Great Georgian King united Georgia in XI century. That period was the Golden time for Georgia - the same as during the reign of Queen Tamar (1184-1213) — the epoch of cultural renascence, of monasteries building, of wall paintings and ornaments creation. Richly decorated churches were the source of the nation unification — even in the high-mountain regions. The last conqueror of Georgia was Russia which began to annex Georgia in 1801 and finished to in 1917. Over a period of 200 years of its history Georgia has been the part of the Russian Empire: first as its province (gubernia) and then as a Soviet Republic. And even in this period Georgia could preserve its
Language, culture and originality. In 1991 the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Georgia proclaimed its independence from the USSR. In 1992 Georgia became the 179th member of UNO and various International and Regional Organizations.
